Matagamon High Adventure Base
The wilds of northern Maine offer a variety of fascinating environments – enormous lakes carved by glaciers, whitewater churning down rocky rivers, craggy peaks soaring skyward, endless conifer and hardwood forests, abundant wildlife, and a profusion of colorful wildflowers. The Matagamon High Adventure Base base has many programs that interpret both the historical and natural wonders of north Maine woods. Eight-day treks are the most popular.
While not an official Scouting America High Adventure Base, the Matagamon High Adventure Base is located at the north entrance to Baxter State Park in northern Maine (near Patten, Maine, and 37 miles off of Interstate 95). The Matagamon High Adventure Base is sponsored by the Katahdin Area Council and provides many opportunities for backpacking and white-water and flat-water canoeing. These treks are less expensive then other high adventure treks.

Treks rang from a minimum 6 days and up and Scouts can select itineraries from easy to strenuous. Treks can combine both backpacking and white-water and flat-water canoeing. Many groups also include day-hikes or side-trips in their planning. Itineraries are flexible and may include float plane access, wilderness or developed campsites, whitewater or flat-water canoeing, hiking in Baxter State Park, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, or any combination of these. Climbing one of Maine's majestic high peaks, such as Mt. Katahdin, provide vantage points seen by very few casual visitors. Additionally, there are limitless opportunities to visit historical landmarks or unique natural areas, many of which are enriched with the varied culture of Maine.
